There are natural curves in the spine when the body is upright

These curves allow the joints and muscles to move easily.

There is a natural curve backwards at the neck (yellow line)

A natural curve forward at the ribs (orange line)

And a natural curve backwards at the low back (red line)

The term “neutral” refers to a position of the spine where there can be movement between the joints.

Neutral posture is the safest and strongest spine position—we can call this the best spine posture. When the hips are balanced on the chair, the postural muscles are active, and there are small movements throughout the spine.
